Searching For Myself

A Quick Note: I’ve been thinking about doing some kind of “deep thoughts” post. I have some ideas, and I haven’t done that for a while…for good reason. There’s too much serious stuff going on in the world right now. I don’t want to add to it yet. So instead, I decided to poke some fun at myself…and my last name. Enjoy.

Search engines were relatively new when I started college in the mid-1990s. I still have a vague memory of doing an Internet search for my name for the first time, and like any normal human, I still redo the search from time to time, just for kicks. Not much comes up. I don’t guess many Thetfords have done much of note. I can’t say I blame them.

I have found some good stuff though.

There’s a Thetford, Vermont. It looks really pretty in the pictures online. I should go there sometime.

I found Thetford, England, which also looks very nice. It also happens to be the hometown of American Revolutionary Thomas Paine. There’s a statue of him and everything…which I find moderately ironic, but no one asked my opinion.

Since I’m mentioning locations, I should also make note of Thetford Mines in Quebec, Canada. It too looks really nice. I should probably travel more.

But the best search result I found was not a location. It is a business. One of the largest makers/suppliers of RV toilets and related products is named…Thetford. How appropriate.

I’ve known this fun fact for a while and have even made a few jokes about it over the years. It hit a little closer to home last month when we bought our travel trailer. The first time I walked into the bathroom and lifted the toilet lid, my last name was printed in nice big letters.

Look, a personalized toilet for the RV! Awesome!

I also found some personalized toilet paper. This is getting pretty fantastic!

Just for the record, I’m not associated with Thetford, so no, they aren’t paying me for this free advertising. But if they’d like to send a few samples my way, I wouldn’t complain.
